“What’s your honest opinion on PayPay?” Vol. 6 Merchant support staff

This is a feature article that involves PayPay employees giving their “honest opinion” on “why they joined” and the “surprises encountered after joining”. This time, we sat down with Chulsu Kim from the Merchant support Department!

Chulsu is responsible for all aspects of merchant support operations, such as establishing operations regarding new services for merchants, managing the merchant support desk, and improving various operations.

From where & why did you join PayPay?

Prior to joining PayPay, I was tasked with managing the logistics of equipment in a liquor & beverage company.

It was during this time that I learned about a new service called Alipay, which led me to think that the Japanese lifestyle of “cash is best” would change in the near future.

I thought that if a system like Alipay could be created in Japan it would surely transform people’s lifestyles and contribute to society. Also, on a personal note, I’m the type that prefers not to carry cash around. That’s why I decided to join PayPay, upon its establishment in August 2018.

What things surprised you after joining PayPay?

I joined the company right before PayPay was launched, so we had to build everything from scratch, which meant that every day was sheer chaos.

I was especially surprised by the situation of the initial team. We had to build the entire customer support operations with just four people. This team, by the way, was a “Division” despite its size.

Are you happy having joined PayPay?

I’m very happy. The best part is that even though we have turned into a big organization, each person can still speak out and participate when making important decisions.

It was a huge effort for a team of four to create a structure for almost all areas of customer support operations, and yet, the fact that we were able to examine and discuss everything from scratch filled me with a strong sense of responsibility for the decisions we had to make. It was a very rewarding experience that I had never experienced before in my life.

Even now, as I approach my third year at PayPay, I feel that I am growing all the time, thanks to the environment in which I have the freedom to express my opinion.
