Dhruva Tanneru
Product Manager
Hello Everyone! I am Dhruva, Product Manager of Online Payments Product Division. I have been working with PayPay for more than 3 years. During this time I have learnt and grown a lot with the company.
*The Japanese version of the article is also available here.
What I am working on currently
I help expand the Online Payments business for PayPay by introducing PayPay as a payment method for online merchants or by introducing new payment features. Online Payments can be understood as any payments which are made without physically going to a store to pay at the cashier. So, if you want to point your finger at someone for the seamless flow or annoying bugs in the online payments, it would be me 🙂

My typical daily schedule
I typically start my work at around 9:30 a.m. Sometimes it could start from 8:30 a.m. if there are early meetings with overseas merchant teams. I usually have about 4-5 meetings a day to discuss ongoing projects, do business meetings, and brainstorm new and exciting ideas. I try to be done with work by 5:30 p.m. to hit the gym and cook dinner.
My career before joining PayPay
Being a Computer Science major, I was working as a software engineer before PayPay. An interesting point is that, I first joined PayPay as a software engineer and was given an amazing opportunity to move to the Product Management side of things. This is by far the best thing that has happened in my career!
Why I decide to join PayPay
The big 10 Billion yen Campaign! This was back in 2019, most people in Japan would have come to know PayPay by this campaign. PayPay was providing at least 20% and up to 100% cash back on any transaction. At the time, I was deciding to switch jobs and move away from Japan; however, the excitement and the energy PayPay Product team was carrying could not be ignored. This was one of the first motivations for me to consider PayPay, and I am very glad to have decided to join this journey with PayPay.
A challenge that I experienced and overcame at PayPay
The best part of PayPay is that there are always challenges! For me it was back in 2021 January, when I was given the responsibility to introduce PayPay as Payment Method on Amazon. Amazon was doing this for the first time with a wallet player like PayPay in Japan. So, we had to discuss each and every detail with respect to how the user flow, payment flow and operations should be. This has helped me grow significantly as a Product Manager at PayPay and understand how all the services work!
Attractive points about working in PayPay
At PayPay, there is never a shortage of challenging tasks, be it delivering something new which no one has done before or solving exciting technical problems. These challenges also open doors to accelerated career growth if one is open to take ownership of and get things done! I would also like to mention that most of the Product team can speak English, which makes my life a lot easier.
Message to aspiring PayPay employees
If you like to take ownership and solve challenging problems, PayPay would be one of the best places for you. We have recently hit the 52 Million mark for registered users and this is just the beginning of exciting products to launch from 0 to 1!
