Holding a workshop with the PayPay Securities design team to create group synergy!

Hello! We are the PayPay Product Design Team. PayPay is committed to updating every touchpoint related to “payments” and “finance.” In this context, the role of designers is diverse. In a rapidly changing market, to deliver user experiences beyond imagination, it’s essential to converge the expertise and knowledge of each group company and create new value.

As part of our initiatives to strengthen group synergy, we recently held a workshop with the PayPay Securities design team. In this article, we’ll introduce the challenges faced by designers within the PayPay Group by explaining the background and content of this workshop.

Design Chit-Chat Team

Hello! We are the Chit-Chat Team! We are passionate about connecting people and sharing knowledge, which is why we planned this workshop. We have organized many PayPay events in the past, such as Tea Party and recruitment events. And yes, this PayPay Design Talk, which you are reading now, is also managed by us.

Significance of the workshop

As the PayPay Group continues to grow, talented designers are steadily joining each group company, including PayPay Securities, PayPay Card, and PayPay Bank. However, collaboration among designers from different companies has been limited to an individual level, and we hadn’t established an organizational platform that directly fosters synergy.

Designers across the PayPay Group companies strive daily to deliver the best user experience, even as they face varying user requirements, legal regulations, and system requirements. By sharing the best practices developed by each company, we have the potential to provide a more seamless and value-added user experience. As the first step, we planned this workshop to create a foundation for synergy by first sharing our respective products, missions, and challenges with PayPay Securities.

Workshop day highlights

On the day of the workshop, members from both teams gathered in one meeting room for the first time. After introducing the workshop’s goal of “deepening mutual understanding,” the design team structures of each company, and the product lines of both teams, recently joined members introduced themselves and their teams. Afterward, we formed six teams, mixing members from PayPay and PayPay Securities, and conducted a group discussion on the theme of “Challenges and Solutions for Creating Group Synergy.”

During the discussion, challenges such as “not knowing who to collaborate with regarding design” (issues related to inter-group communication) and differences in each company’s design systems and tools were shared. On the other hand, ideas for solutions also emerged, such as creating a common messaging channel between the two companies and standardizing design systems, clarifying future areas for improvement.

After the workshop, we provided lunch for everyone, allowing both teams to eat together. The conversation flowed freely during the meal, deepening relationships among the members. It was a meaningful time that laid the foundation for future value creation through smooth collaboration.

Insights gained from the workshop

Through the workshop, we gained insights regarding the following three points:

  • Mutual understanding of products: We had a general idea of what PayPay and PayPay Securities do, but through this workshop, we gained a deeper, detailed understanding. This will likely help improve design quality through mutual understanding. For example, by leveraging the UI provided in PayPay Securities’ asset management, we can ensure a similar UI is provided for similar services, thereby improving usability.
  • Challenge of communication frequency: We all want to create excellent designs, but we realized that there is a lack of communication among us. Therefore, we need to establish regular forums for dialogue and information-sharing mechanisms like joint design meetings to maintain alignment.
  • Importance of leveraging group synergy: This workshop generated various challenges and ideas that we would not have noticed on our own. This suggests that we can provide even better services if we combine our strengths, and we strongly felt the importance of collaboration.

Conclusion

This workshop was a crucial first step in strengthening the bond between the PayPay and PayPay Securities design teams. By actively addressing the challenge of enhanced communication, we are confident that we can generate further synergy and deliver innovative and convenient products to our users. Why not join us in creating the future of cashless payments?
