PayPay’s Efforts to Grow Its Business through Cross-Cultural Initiatives

2024.07.11

PayPay is a fintech company that started its service in 2018 and acquired users at breakneck speed, surpassing 64 million users in just five and a half years (as of June 2024). Currently, it boasts a diverse workforce representing 50 countries and regions, daily challenging themselves to create a future beyond imagination.

To leverage this potential of multiple nationalities to further refine its services, a cross-cultural seminar spanning two days was held in May.

Seminar Themes

  • Day 1: Discovering Diversity through Technology
  • Day 2: Market Analysis from Global Business Practices

We witnessed quite a multinational group of people holding lively discussions over the two days.

Patil Parag (Cloud Solutions Unit, Cloud Infrastructure Team, Infrastructure Technology Department, Payment & Technology Platform Division, Product Group)

PayPay’s multicultural environment has been enlightening for me. Initially, I assumed fluency in Japanese was essential, but the support of interpreters and the company’s English-friendly environment eased my transition to my job and daily life.

The seminar facilitated cross-cultural exchanges, where diverse nationalities collaborated, sharing insights and addressing challenges specific to their regions. This collaborative ethos not only strengthens our company’s foundation but also fosters broader perspectives and understanding. It prepares us to anticipate and address issues arising from diverse cultural backgrounds, enriching our collective knowledge and enhancing business drive.

Misaki Matsushiro (Synergy Promotion Team, Synergy Promotion Department, Marketing Strategy Division, Business Operations Group)

I experience firsthand PayPay’s diversity every day as I consult with colleagues from India and South Korea in a project where we are planning to introduce a new service. I find it stimulating and very enjoyable.

I believe we are able to create services that continue to be chosen by many people because we can make the best of a cross-cultural environment, discussing matters from diverse perspectives and brushing up our services.

Mai Takeshita (Strategy Planning Team, Business Development Department, Finance Business Strategy Division, Finance Business Group)

In designing services, I often exchange opinions with people from various countries and cultural backgrounds. This allows us to plan world-class services accommodating diverse needs. Through the seminar, I realized that the open-mindedness of our employees—to see things from multiple angles in a multicultural setting and accepting opinions of others—is the driving force behind us producing even better products.

Concluding Words

At the end of the two-day workshop, we received comments from Hagiwara-san, who was in charge of organizing the event.

Hagiwara-san
Why do companies emphasize D&I (Diversity & Inclusion)? It boils down to the fact that our society is a rich mixture of different people.

When the potential beneficiaries of services represent a wide array of backgrounds and “norms”, but the service is designed with only a homogenous user base in mind, that results in a disconnect, making it difficult for the service to gain societal acceptance. With this in mind, the fact that PayPay has amassed over 64 million users as of June 2024 is a testament to the wide reach of our services’ UI/UX.

Instead of aligning with just one set of values, we aim to deliver services woven together by individuals from over 50 countries. Transforming these varied backgrounds’ “differences” into “strengths” is at the heart of our management strategy. PayPay is committed to continuing this approach, fostering a richer society.
