What is Design Chit-Chat?
When discussing PayPay’s innovations, it’s impossible to ignore the diverse product team, which consists of talented individuals from around 50 countries and regions. These globally skilled professionals collaborate daily to push the boundaries and build a future beyond imagination.
In our ‘Design Chit-Chat’ series, we strive to capture the unique energy and spirit of the PayPay design team, directly from its members. This time, we’re joined by Md Nadim from the Product Design Department.

Md Nadim
Senior Product Designer, Design Department, Product Division
I’m originally from Bangladesh and moved to Japan in 2022. With over seven years of experience in digital product design, I have a strong passion for fintech. I found PayPay to be a perfect fit for my interests and skills, so I joined the team in July 2023.
What is your team and what does it do?
I’m a Senior Product Designer at PayPay, working within the Payment & P2P department. I lead the design efforts for the P2P (Peer-to-Peer) features, focusing on core functionalities like sending and receiving money, as well as the split billing function. Additionally, I contribute to the Design System working group, where I help manage and maintain our global design library.
What made you become a designer?
My journey into product design started with a passion for creativity and problem-solving. I began my career as a graphic designer on freelance marketplaces. My background in Computer Science and Engineering naturally steered me towards the problem-solving aspects of design, and soon enough, I found myself drawn to the world of UI/UX.
Driven by curiosity, I taught myself the skills necessary to transition into this exciting field, and it turned out to be a seamless and incredibly rewarding experience. This shift not only broadened my perspective but also opened doors to new opportunities, including my move to Japan. After gaining valuable experience with several companies in Bangladesh, I was thrilled to join PayPay in 2023, where I’m now part of an amazing team shaping the future of fintech.
What projects have you recently worked on?
Recently, we focused on improving the visibility of our group billing feature and refining the core payment flows. One of my key initiatives was leading an A/B test to make the split bill button more prominent after payments that could be shared among users. This seemingly small change had a significant impact on the user experience. Additionally, we revamped the entire group bill creation and splitting process, making it much more intuitive and user-friendly. We’re also working on some exciting new projects that will be launched soon. Stay tuned!

How do you come up with ideas?
When it comes to generating ideas, I draw heavily on a blend of competitive analysis and design thinking. I begin by exploring the market to identify emerging trends and examine the solutions that other products are offering. This helps me gain a solid understanding of the competitive landscape and spot opportunities for innovation. From there, I immerse myself in design thinking methods, which guide me to empathize with users, define their needs, brainstorm creative solutions, and rapidly test and refine those ideas. This approach ensures that every idea I bring to the table is not only innovative but also deeply rooted in a thorough understanding of user needs and behaviors.
I also believe that an organized workspace is important for fostering creative ideas. Especially at PayPay, where we’ve adopted a hybrid work style, you need to set up your own environment. Therefore we held a “Show off your workspace” event within the design team to foster a culture of recognizing good workspaces.

Inspiring Workspaces from the Design Team
The “Show Off Your Workspace” event has been a big success, highlighting creativity not just in our designs but also in how we arrange our workspaces. Working remotely means that creating a space that sparks both productivity and innovation is more important than ever.
I was truly inspired by the workspaces shared during the event. One that really stood out to me was Sekki Shiba- san’s minimalistic setup. It was simple yet full of character, creating a space that felt calm and clutter-free. Another workspace that caught my eye was Pihsu Wang-san’s. His modern setup, bathed in with lamps and decorated with beautiful artwork, felt both practical and inspiring. It showed how the right mix of art and light can really spark creativity.
In my view, a good workspace should support both comfort and creativity. It needs to be organized but flexible enough to adapt to different tasks, blending functionality with inspiration.

What do you prioritize when creating a product at PayPay?
When designing at PayPay, I place a strong emphasis on accessibility. Our app is used by people of all ages, so it’s crucial for me to ensure that our user interface is inclusive and easy to navigate for everyone. Crafting intuitive user flows that accommodate such a diverse audience is both a challenge and a source of pride for me.
Another key aspect of my work is speed. At PayPay, we live by the motto, “Speed is our bet on the market,” which drives us to iterate rapidly and stay ahead in the fast-paced digital landscape. This sense of urgency pushes me to implement key changes quickly while maintaining our high standards of quality.
What sort of challenges do you want to take on in PayPay?
Moving forward, I’m excited to continue innovating within the group billing feature, making it even more seamless and intuitive. I also want to play a larger role in refining PayPay’s UI language through my contributions to the Design System working group. My ultimate goal is to create products that not only meet our users’ needs but also foster an emotional connection with them, ensuring that their experience with PayPay is both delightful and memorable.
